What is KYBELLA®, and How Does It Work?
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring chemical that helps the body break down and absorb fat. The deoxycholic acid in KYBELLA® is identical to that found in the body, which, once carefully injected into submental fat, results in a process known as cytolysis, which bursts cells.
With multiple small injections administered under the chin, KYBELLA® can destroy many of the cells that compose chin fat to noticeably reduce the size of a double chin.
What to Expect with KYBELLA® Treatments
The number of injections and sessions of KYBELLA® you may need depends on your own starting point and what your aesthetic goals are. Each treatment session is spaced at least one month apart, with six sessions as the maximum a patient may receive.
During a typical session, you injector will clean the area to be treated, then administer KYBELLA® directly under the chin, carefully targeting specific points to achieve the most effective results. This will involve numerous injections, all focused on the submental area.

It is important to inform your injector of any other facial procedures you have received or would like to receive, medical conditions you may have, and medications you take.
The FDA has approved KYBELLA® for use in patients over 18 who have no infections in the treatment areas. It has not been approved for fat outside the submental region, or for fat in the chin area that isn't directly under the skin.
The most common side effects include bruising, swelling, or numbness in the treatment areas. These effects, which are common to many injectable treatments, tend to be temporary, and usually subside a few days following treatment, after which you may resume your normal activities. The area right under the chin may experience numbness for up to four weeks.
